EH Smith working in conjunction with one of their supply chain partners Laing O’Rourke, where asked to assist in the second phase of the William Street quarter redevelopment in Barking, a development based as much as possible on Laing O’Rourke’s Design for Manufacture and Assembly(DFMA) solutions, an aim they have to make Building safer whilst increasing the quality of the finished project and keeping waste to an absolute minimum through the use of off-site manufacturing.

Traditionally laid Brick mews houses surround on three sides the central 10 Storey Block which was designed and produced using this off site technology, recognizing the need to mirror as much as possible the DFMA ideology on the Mews, EH Smith through their early involvement proposed the use of a pre-manufactured Light weight lintel system in conjunction with Keystone.

The resulting changes to the previous design not only embraced the DFMA ethos, but it allowed for these Factory finished Brick and Stone faced finished Lintels to be laid at a far greater speed resulting in a saving of time and money without any compromise to quality of workmanship on the project.

Laing O’Rourke’s long standing working relationship with EH Smith meant we were able to engage them at the very earliest stages of the project to explore a number of options for the external façade, their help and expertise has allowed us to bring an element of the companies DFMA strategy to what is considered a traditional build, and their knowledge of suitable options allowed for the use of a system that met all of the high expectations in terms of the finished façade, yet allowed for a far greater ease and speed of build.
